Pink Trumpet Tree (Handroanthis avellande)
This semi-deciduous tree that drops most of its foliage just before late winter and then produces its flowers in late winter or early spring. Young trees grow fast until they reach about 20 feet then slow to a moderate grow rate until they mature at height of approximately 30 feet with a canopy almost as wide. Younger trees tend to have a somewhat irregular canopy for, but with age develop a graceful rounded and spreading canopy that has a coarse texture to it. They develop a straight, smooth trunk with light gray bark. The foliage is a shiny olive green on both surfaces. They are known for their showy lavender pink flowers. As the tree matures its flowers become larger and more profuse. Heavier flowering occurs in warmer temperatures. The flowers are followed by 1 foot long seed pods that can be found at the ends of branches and persist into winter. The pink trumpet tree makes a good for street tree and is suitable for 4 ndash; 5 foot wide grow space. Because of their compact stature they are suitable for use under utility lines. This species does not have any significant pest problems. Mature trees will tolerate drought. They grow best in sandy loam soil that is well drained.
