Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)
A slow growing evergreen tree with a formal, dense pyramidal shaped canopy that can reach a height of 60 feet with a spreading of 40 feet. They have glossy, stiff and leathery leaves that are deep green with rusty brown undersides. They produce large showy flowers that have light yellow to ivory petals throughout the summer followed by cone shaped pods that split open to reveal shiny bright red seeds. They are tolerant of heat and damp soil and somewhat drought tolerant. Must have good drainage. Leaf litter may become a problem. No significant pest problems are known at this time. Tolerates root pruning and relocation. They should be pruned every 5 years as overgrown trees are prone to drop limbs during periods of high heat.
