A slow growing evergreen tree with a dense pyramidal shaped canopy that can reach a mature height of 60 feet with a canopy spread of 20 – 25 feet. They develop deeply fissured, fibrous and flaking, reddish brown bark. The foliage is flattened fanlike sprays of leaves that are aromatic and fine textured. They produce small yellowish brown to reddish brown cones at branch tips that are about an inch long. Infrequent and deep watering in youth can help it tolerate drought in later stages of life. Twig canker is common especially when not given adequate irrigation. They tolerate poor soils and summer heat. Newly planted trees will die very quickly if subjected to soil build up around the trunk flare or excess irrigation in soils with poor drainage.
